Homeless Initiative

Nursing Services celebrates its first Magnet® anniversary with a year of service to homeless veterans. Organized by the Magnet Champions, each unit, clinic and CBOC participated in this initiative.

January: Personal Care Items for Homeless Veterans

Over 2,939 pounds of personal care items were collected from Jan 20th thru Feb 21st – 1.5 tons!!! Items were collected from dental offices, apartment complexes, Sam’s Club, a credit union, family and friends. A mother of a nurse who is retired and on a limited income donated money so that items could be purchased. A church donated $705 to the VA’s Homeless Veteran Program. Individuals donated over $1,100 to Porchlight for their homeless veteran transitional housing. Personal care items came not only from nursing units, clinics and CBOCs, but also Pharmacy, Surgical Services, Organizational Improvement, and Volunteer Services. The Wear Your Packer Shirt Day collected over 75 lbs. The items will be used by Volunteer Services, Porchlight, Vet Center,  Homeless Veteran Housing (Janesville), & the Freeport Veteran Assistance Commission.

March: Helping the Sole of a Veteran

In March, shoes and socks were collected. Nursing units, clinics, and other areas collected over 446 pairs of shoes and 1,411 pairs of socks – a total of more than 1,908 pairs! These were then donated to our Volunteer Services for the Clothes Closet, Porchlight, YWCA, and Freeport Veteran’s Assistance Commission. Freeport CBOC won the “Travelling Eagle Trophy” for collecting 772 pairs of shoes and socks.
