Falls Prevention and Balance Retraining

About this Service

If you have fallen recently, you understand the impact it can have on your sense of comfort and ease to move freely in your home and community.  With every additional fall, a sense of uncertainty and fear may prompt you to limit your activities with family and friends.

When your doctor asks you if you have fallen, you might find yourself dismissing or disregarding falls you've had because of fear that you might lose your independence.  If you find yourself relating to any of these scenarios, consider requesting a Falls Evaluation.

The Physical Therapy Falls Evaluation is part of a multifactorial approach to falls prevention and intervention. Our evaluation process includes the following components:

Detailed Interview

First, a detailed interview is performed to determine:

  • Previous falls
  • Medical history
  • Home safety and current environment

Physical Assessment

Second, a physical assessment of gait, balance, and mobility level is performed. This physical assessment includes:

  • Heart rate and blood pressure changes in response to various positions
  • Muscle strength testing
  • Joint motion and function
  • Balance, vestibular and gait testing
  • Examination of feet/footwear
  • Impact of visual changes

Review of Test Findings

Third, we wrap the initial session with a review of test findings and discuss your options to decrease your risk for falls. A carefully designed home program custom to your situation will be developed for you. You will also receive education on changes you can make in your home environment.

Follow-up Appointments

Finally, follow up appointments will be scheduled to advance your program, reassess your progress and discuss any concerns.
