William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital
Military Women: WWII–Present
In honor of Women’s History Month, Therese Hughes, author and photographer, will speak at the Madison VA at 12:00 Noon on March 19. Veterans, families, hospital visitors and staff are invited. Ms. Hughes will be speaking about her project titled “I am a U.S. Veteran: Military Women [WWII-Present].
Ms. Hughes was one of fourteen nationally selected members to study healthcare delivery for the two-year congressionally mandated Wyden-Hatch Congressional Health Care Task Force. She participated in conducting interviews and writing reports to the U. S. Congress and the President of the United States. She worked on the Hill as a Senate Summer Fellow and in the District Office of Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez. These experiences introduced her to women Veterans with a variety of needs.
Ms. Hughes is a child of two WWII USN Veterans. Knowledge of her father’s work was in direct contrast to the lack of information her mother provided while working in defense of our nation. These facts coincided with her understanding of the women Veterans she met at her workplaces. That understanding being: no one believes I served; no one believes my job was my job and no one has honored women Veterans. Utilizing her photography and interview skills, Ms. Hughes is working to HONOR our nation’s women Veterans through a civilian’s lens. “I am a U. S. Veteran: Military Women [WWII – Present] Project” is a photo-journal book and a photography exhibit.
Her project is supported and vetted by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Women in Military Service to America (WIMSA) Foundation. The photography exhibit’s opening will be at WIMSA in Arlington National Cemetery. Ms. Hughes has interviewed and photographed approximately 700 women Veterans at this point and is interested in meeting and interviewing women Veterans during her presentation at the Madison VA. Women Veterans who are interested in being interviewed are invited to meet with Ms. Hughes for a 30 minute interview in the VA Auditorium on March 19. Ms. Hughes will be available from 9:00 am- Noon and from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm on that date. There also will be an exhibit of photographs that can be viewed after the 12:00 (noon) Presentation.
Ms. Hughes presentation is sponsored by the VA Women Veterans Health Program and the Federal Women’s Program.
