Madison VA Receives Greenhealth Emerald Award
In recognition for leading the health care industry in sustainability and environmental stewardship, the Madison VA Hospital (VAH) received the Greenhealth Emerald Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care.
The Greenhealth Emerald Award recognizes health care facilities that are setting the standard in eliminating mercury, reducing and recycling waste, sustainable sourcing, and other areas. Winning hospitals have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and shown leadership in the local community and in the health care sector. The Madison VAH previously received the Greenhealth Emerald Award in 2014 and 2016. In 2016, the Madison VAH was also named one of the "50 Greenest Hospitals in America" by Becker’s Hospital Review.
"We are extremely proud of being presented the Greenhealth Emerald Award once again this year," said John Rohrer, Madison VAH Director. "For more than two decades, we’ve placed a high focus on recycling and environmental sustainability. I congratulate our entire team on this accomplishment because it is their hard work that has earned Madison VA Hospital this recognition."
The hospital’s efforts go beyond recycling and improvements have been achieved in energy and water efficiency as well. In addition to the Emerald Award, VAH has been specially recognized by Practice Greenhealth for past water conservation projects, virtual elimination of mercury, and its "Greening the Operating Room (OR)" efforts.
Other sustainability programs and projects include a weekly farmers market, community garden, a green roof that was installed over a newly constructed portion of the hospital, and environmental programming and educational workshops.
